Community Led Total Sanitation - Ihmiset täytyy saada haluamaan parempaa, eikä terveys ja järkeen vetoaminen tehoa sivistymättömiin massoihin. Ihmiset täytyy saada kohtamaan vallitsevan tilansa huonous ja vedota heidän sosiaaliseen statukseensa ja ylpeyteensä.

A few visitors will go to a village, and the villagers will want to show off their village to the guests. They'll take them around the village, and then at the end of the tour, the visitors will say, "Well, yes, that's nice, but can we see your open defecation grounds?" Because they're polite, the villagers will take them there. The technique is to make people stand there and confront it, to not be able to turn away from the fact that they're shitting in the open, and that their kids are tramping it back into the village, and that they're all eating it. Someone calculated that people in villages who are doing open defecation are probably ingesting 10 grams of shit a day. That's pretty disgusting. People will run off and dig latrines. Once the whole village is cleaned up, nobody will want to be the dirty person in the village. And once the village is cleaned up, the clean village will be in competition with the next village, and that village will want to clean up. It's a chain reaction.

We can’t simply switch off our person-permanence thinking just because someone has died. This inability is especially the case, of course, for those whom we were closest to and whom we frequently imagined to be actively engaging in various activities when out of sight. And so person permanence may be the final cognitive hurdle that gets in the way of our effectively realizing the dead as they truly are—infinitely in situ, inanimate carbon residue. Instead it’s much more “natural” to imagine them as existing in some vague, unobservable locale, very much living their dead lives.

Kryoniikan voi siis ajatella tarjoavan luonnollisemman tavan käsitellä kuolemaa säilyttämällä ihmistä rajatilassa elämän ja kuoleman välissä. Ihmisaivot on varustettu turhan toivon ja laihan lohdun moduulilla, joka saa ajattelemaan kuolleita edelleen jossakin muodossa elävinä sen sijaan, että läheisen ihmisen poissaolon hyväksyisi automaattisesti. Yleensä toivon ja lohdun tarjoaa uskonto (tai käyttää sitä hyväksi) esimerkiksi jälleensyntymisen, paratiisin tai sielun muodossa - kuollut menee muka johonkin parempaan paikkaan, vaikka on selvästi menossa vain maan alle mätänemään.

Kryoniikka yhdistetään kenties tätä kautta automaattisesti uskonnollisuuteen. Kryoniikka on tietysti useimpien ihmisten näkökulmasta paljon laihempi lohtu kuin uskonto, sukulainen pakastimessa tuntuu kammottavammalta kuin sukulainen paratiisissa. Tai kryoniikkaa ajatellaan tilanteena, jossa olisi parempi sammuttaa elossapitojärjestelmä, jotta "sielu saa rauhan ja siirtyy eteenpäin". Minulle uskonnot eivät tarjoa minkäänlaista lohtua, joten epämääräinen rajatila on parempi kuin varma kuolema. Kryosäiliöissä olevien läheisteni muisteleminen olisi tunteellisesti tasapainoisempaa kuin haudassa makaavien muisteleminen. En surisi yhtä paljon.

Jos sukulaiseni makaisi sairaalassa hengityskoneessa ja kaikki toivo vaikuttaisi menneeltä, en haluaisi sammuttaa hengityskonetta vaan siirtää hänet kryosäiliöön. Ajatus on periaatteessa erillään siitä voiko kryosäiliöstä loppujen lopuksi ikinä herätä; kuolleenkin kehon säilyminen tietyssä paikassa olisi minusta emotionaalisesti helpompaa kuin kehon katoaminen multaan. Haluaisin myös oman ruumiini kryosäilytykseen mieluummin kuin hautaan, koska ajattelen sen aiheuttavan vähemmän surua minua kaipaamaan jääville.

Uuden säilytysteknologian ansiosta minulla on siis enemmän aivojeni luonnollisen arkkitehtuurin mukainen suhde kuolemaan ilman ikäviä uskonnollisia sivuvaikutuksia. Onko tämä yleistä? Kuinka kryosäilötyn ihmisen sukulaiset pärjäävät keskimäärin verrattuna esimerkiksi haudatun tai kadonneen ihmisen sukulaisiin? Siinä voisi olla psykologisen tutkimuksen aihetta. Ja jos tutkimus näyttäisi, että ihmiset selviävät läheistensä poissaolosta paremmin kryoniikan ansiosta, vastustaisiko sitä joku siksi, että hautaamisen aiheuttaman surun määrän on pysyttävä yhtä korkeana kuin ennenkin ja surua ei saa lievittää tällä tavoin "keinotekoisesti"?

The Future of Driving, Part II: Life after driving

Today, the cars people drive to work sit idle all day, taking up space in a parking lot. If cars could drive themselves, they could spend the workday ferrying other passengers around downtown, re-charging their batteries, delivering packages, or performing other useful work. That has twin benefits: it helps earn revenue for the car owner, and it avoids having to pay for parking. The result will be that in most circumstances, hiring a cab (or allowing your car to be used as a cab when you're not in it) will be dramatically cheaper than owning a car and having it parked all day.

The old hunter-gatherer model of journalism is no longer sufficient. Now that information is so plentiful, we don't need new information so much as help in processing what's already available. This war must end. It is time we recognize that we can't kill this creativity. We can only criminalize it. We can't stop our kids from using these tools to create, or make them passive. We can only drive it underground, or make them "pirates." And the question we as a society must focus on is whether this is any good. Our kids live in an age of prohibition, where more and more of what seems to them to be ordinary behavior is against the law. They recognize it as against the law. They see themselves as "criminals." They begin to get used to the idea. That recognition is corrosive. It is corrupting of the very idea of the rule of law. And when we reckon the cost of this corruption, any losses of the content industry pale in comparison.

In a few generations, Nicolelis speculates, brain implants will be as socially acceptable as breast implants are today. “Implants will happen in normals when there is a benefit and they are safe,” he states. He agrees with others that the technology will shape the evolution of Homo sapiens, and his perspective is unmistakably philosophical. Today, he says, we are all in a sense locked-in, but we won’t be for long. “With these experiments we’ve accomplished something that nobody has noticed yet: We have freed the brain from the body. We have created a profound new paradigm for the brain—and not just the disabled brain—to enact its will without the limitations of the biological machinery that we call a body. My children probably will see the day when they can sit physically on a beautiful beach in Brazil but at the same time control a rover on Mars, experience Mars,” Nicolelis reflects. “Their bodies will be here, but their brains will be free.”

Aivot tuottavat puuttuvan kontrollin tilalle "virtuaalista itsetuntoa" ja saavat ihmisen tarrautumaan taikauskoihin, rituaaleihin, rukouksiin, salaliittoteorioihin ym. oljenkorsiin (vangit tarrautuvat uskontoon, sairaat ihmeparannuksiin ja niin edelleen). Ominaisuus on säilynyt, koska siitä on ollut epävarmoina aikoina hyötyä - elämä on tuntunut olevan täynnä selittämättömiä asioita, joten mieli on keksinyt rauhoittuakseen virtuaalisia selityksiä ja ominaisuus on jäänyt elämään selviytyjiin ja heidän jälkeläisiinsä.

Lost in the snowy Alps and despondent, a party of troops found a map in their belongings, a discovery that revitalized them and got them home. Back at camp they learned that the map they used was actually of the Pyrenees, not the Alps. Just the sense of control—gained from spotting (arbitrary) correlations between the map and the mountains—saved their lives.

Future research will explore whether lacking control increases non-illusory pattern perception. Are powerless people better at spotting very subtle patterns that others miss?
