Researchers Use Brain Interface to Post to Twitter
Wilson, who used the interface to post the Twitter update, likens it to texting on a cell phone. “You have to press a button four times to get the character you want,” he says of texting. “So this is kind of a slow process at first.” However, as with texting, users improve as they practice using the interface. “I’ve seen people do up to eight characters per minute,” says Wilson.

Brain Wave of The Future
In the 1st century, Heron of Alexandria invented the aeolipile: a metal ball with curved nozzles sticking out of it, perched on stilts. With water in it, and flame beneath it, the resultant steam would make it spin, whiz, whiz, whiz. Such fun. Nobody understood they were looking at a steam engine. Hence, the Industrial Revolution didn't start for another 1700 years. In 1267 Roger Bacon wrote about "a child's toy of sound and fire and explosion made in various parts of the world with powder of saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal of hazelwood." That description of firecrackers is one of the earliest European references to gunpowder. Toys make sense as early adoptions of a new technology. Parents will pay to make their children smile.

Brain Gain: The underground world of “neuroenhancing” drugs
“Often, I’ve looked back at papers I’ve written on Adderall, and they’re verbose. They’re belaboring a point, trying to create this airtight argument, when if you just got to your point in a more direct manner it would be stronger. But with Adderall I’d produce two pages on something that could be said in a couple of sentences.” Nevertheless, his Adderall-assisted papers usually earned him at least a B. They got the job done. As Alex put it, “Productivity is a good thing.”

Transition movement - Jos on pakko peruuttaa yksinkertaisempaan elämään, sen tulisi tapahtua järjestelmällisesti ja suunnitellusti. Vertaa: The Outquisition
Hopkins insists that if an entire community faces this stark challenge together, it might be able to design an “elegant descent” from that peak. We can consciously plot a path into a lower-energy life — a life of walkable villages, local food and artisans and greater intimacy with the natural world — which, on balance, could actually be richer and more enjoyable than what we have now. Transition, Hopkins has written, meets our era’s threats with a spirit of “elation, rather than the guilt, anger and horror” behind most environmental activism.

Science is the engine of prosperity. But you’d never know it, listening to some of these politicians. They’re lawyers and businessmen, not scientists. Lawyers and businessmen massage wealth; they don’t create it. And yet science is given almost no visibility in the media. If a Martian came down to Earth and watched television, he’d come to the conclusion that all the world’s society is based on Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. He’d be amazed that our society hasn’t collapsed.

Stelarc’s video is one the more grisly highlights of “Corpus Extremus (LIFE+),” an exhibit about the wonders and horrors of “PostNatural History,” and the ways in which technology is blurring the traditional notions of life, death and identity.

What they call "social and emotional knowledge" - the ability to read other people, manage our own emotions, and thereby master social situations - doesn't have to be imparted solely through the cut and thrust of lived life. It can be taught, they say, just like trigonometry or French grammar. Psychologists are designing curricula that aim, step by step, to build up students' emotional knowledge: a typical teaching unit might include a role-playing exercise, or a set of diagrams breaking down the components of different facial expressions, or, in older children, a discussion of the subtle differences between disgust and contempt.

Ancient cultures used preservative methods, such as salting and pickling, in order to extend the durability of produce for domestic use. Refrigeration delivered a paradigm shift by removing the site of production from the sight of consumers. -- The nascent advertising industry sold housewives a compelling vision of “nature made simple”, in which refrigeration and vacuum packing provided liberation from dirt and toil. But fears of technological advance persisted, particularly among the religious. Fridges meant left-overs and left-overs meant loose morals, said the Puritans. The small-farm lobby replied to the industrialists’ trumpeting of wants over needs by declaring the “moral superiority of meals prepared fresh”, as well as the health benefits. Freshness demanded the preservation of immemorial relationships between people, land and animals.

Where’s my body’s Control Panel?
Watching “The Biggest Loser” a bit recently (yes that makes me the loser), it strikes me that we have made weight loss into a moral endeavour. “No pain no gain”. We invoke purity/sanctity, the message is “you have sinned, now you must do penance, and only then shall you be rewarded with weight loss”. It’s easy to just accept that, because it plays to our fundamental moral systems, but if you think about it rationally, it’s nuts. What’s really happening with weight gain is that we have a system (our bodies) with a regulatory mechanism adapted to calorie shortage, and no administrative override, no calibration features.

The Society for the Recovery of Persons Apparently Dead - Kuolleita ihmisiä herätetään henkiin! Kuinka se on mahdollista? Palatkaamme historiassa aikaan, jolloin suusta-suuhun-elvytys ja sydämen käynnistäminen sähköllä olivat uusia ja ihmeellisiä asioita, ja ottakaamme niistä oppia kryoniikan tapauksessa, jotta emme toistaisi menneisyyden virheitä.
In 1774, a society was founded in London to promulgate the idea of attempting to resuscitate the dead in some circumstances. Called, after a bit of experimentation, the Society for the Recovery of Persons Apparently Drowned ['The Institute for Affording Immediate Relief for Persons Apparently Dead from Drowning'], it quickly evolved into the Humane Society (and still later, with official patronage and funding, the Royal Humane Society). The Humane Society advocated techniques which were highly advanced. Three months after the society's founding, as an example, a society member had the opportunity to minister to a 3-year-old child named Catherine Sophie Greenhill, who had fallen from an upper story window onto flagstones, and been pronounced dead. The society member, an apothecary named Squires, was on the scene within twenty minutes, and history records that he proceeded to give the clinically dead child several shocks through the chest with a portable electrostatic generator. This treatment caused her to regain pulse and respiration, and she eventually (after a time in coma) recovered fully.
--
It is the propensity of all social movements to go too far. The Humane Society's problem was that, when it came to complicated biology, the late 18th century did not possess the experimental expertise necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff. Thus, within a few years after its founding, the Humane Society had gone from mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the more impressive use of bellows. Following a number of instances of lung rupture with the bellows, however, these complicated and difficult-to-use devices were discarded early in the 19th century. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, unfortunately, was not reinstituted at that time, partly because of the new discovery of life-giving oxygen and the finding that expired air contained less of it (nobody bothered to find out if the difference was significant). For the next century and a quarter, therefore, resuscitative techniques centered around chest massage and armlift techniques, and mouth-to-mouth breathing did not return until the middle of the twentieth century.
--
Emergency electrical defibrillation fared no better. The new phenomenon of electricity had been transformed early-on into a quack cure by the practice of "galvanism" (passing mild shocks through the body in an attempt to cure disease), and its reputation accordingly tarnished.
--
The original Humane Society, though founded by a doctor, was less a professional medical group than a group of ordinary and somewhat evangelistic citizens who (in exactly the manner of cryonicists) had banded together for humanitarian reasons and out of fear of being buried alive.
Mitä on tarinan opetus?

Utopian Surgery: Early arguments against anaesthesia in surgery, dentistry and childbirth.
The City of Zurich initially outlawed anaesthesia altogether. "Pain is a natural and intended curse of the primal sin. Any attempt to do away with it must be wrong", averred the Zurich City Fathers.

One clergyman saw the new chloroform anaesthesia as "a decoy from Satan, apparently offering to bless woman; but, in the end, it will harden society and rob God of the deep earnest cries, which arise in time of trouble for help."

"The escape from pain in surgical operations is a chimera...'Knife' and 'pain' in surgery are words which are always inseparable in the minds of patients", affirmed the great French surgeon Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau.

English doctor Robert Brown explained how God and Nature "walked hand in hand"; and painless delivery was an invention of the Devil.

"Pain in surgical operations is in a majority of cases even desirable, and its prevention or annihilation is for the most part hazardous to the patient", alleged Simpson's adversary Dr James Pitchford, though without adducing any compelling evidence why this might be so.

Dr William Henry Atkinson, first president of the American Dental Association (ADA), protested, "I think anesthesia is of the devil, and I cannot give my sanction to any Satanic influence which deprives a man of the capacity to recognize the law! I wish there were no such thing as anesthesia. I do not think men should be prevented from passing through what God intended them to endure."

Doctor Charles Delucena Meigs (1792-1869), Professor of obstetrics and diseases of women at Jefferson Medical college, was of the opinion that labour-pains were "a most desirable, salutary and conservative manifestation of the life force." This "life force" was weakened by etherization, which should thus be avoided.

Antipathy to painless surgery soon entered scholarly print. The New York Journal of Medicine [9 (1847) 1223-25] declared that pain was vital to surgical procedure, and that its removal was harmful to the patient.

"Ethically, what is the correct thing to do when medicine encounters a difficult problem? Stabilize the patient until a solution can be found? Or throw people away like garbage? Centuries from now, historians may marvel at the shortsightedness and rationalizations used to sanction the unnecessary death of millions."

Maybe the most sustainable thing we could do would be to aim at a future ensconced in cold datacenters under the subtropical deserts of Earth. Humanity would largely look like a forest of quiet semiconductor trees. We would indeed have become plants. -- I personally think that this sketch of a post-biological vegetable humanity is one of the most positive possibilities for our future. I think, once the technology is around, it will attract people voluntarily (after all, it gives the chance for immortality, any conceivable lifestyle *and* is green). It is sustainable, since it would use a minuscule amount of resources, energy and area to keep mankind running and would not need great material flows. Just running on renewable energy it could easily last until the sun starts to act up. It is also able to protect itself and the environment from unforeseen threats: going virtual does not mean we completely abandon the physical world (we would be keeping telepresence bodies around for tourism, repair and science - as well as a few small colonies of holdouts of Homo sapiens just in case).

Surrogaatit

Hondan human-to-robot interface tarjoaa Asimon etäohjausta aivoaalloilla.

Kauko-ohjattavia kehoja fiktiivisessä muodossa tarjoaa myöhemmin tänä vuonna ensi-iltaan tuleva The Surrogates -elokuva, jossa ihmiset elävät turvallisesti kodeissaan ja liikkuvat ulkona ainoastaan telepresenssiandroidien eli etäläsnäolo-sijaisnäyttelijöiden eli surrogaattien kautta. Perustuu Robert Vendittin sarjakuvaan, joka muistuttaa paljon Keith Laumerin tarinaa The Body Builders vuodelta 1966. ChooseYourSurrogate on leffan mainossivu.

Marionettikehoissa on paljon hyödyllisiä puolia.
